Dear Parents and Carers,
Wishing everyone a wonderful break from school and hopefully the opportunity to enjoy some late morning starts. We look forward to seeing everyone back on Tuesday 18 July.
A gentle reminder that Monday 17 July is a pupil free day.
As you know Mrs Sam Peake will be going on leave to await the arrival of her new baby. We are delighted to announce that Mrs Caroline O’Mara will continue teaching Year 1, Wednesday to Friday and Mrs Jess Pearson will be teaching on Monday and Tuesday. We send a warm welcome to Jess and know that she and Caroline will make a great team for the remainder of 2023. We wish Sam, Dave and Ruby every blessing.
Thank you to all of the families who filled in the school survey “Tell Them From Me”. Your voice and feedback is really important to us as we plan for the future. A summary of the findings from the survey will be published in the school newsletter by the Community Council next term. As always the survey findings will inform our Annual Improvement Plan for SHPS.
Take care and keep safe
Crossing Safety
Staff have been working with the Transport Canberra School Safety Program team to improve safety on our school crossings. The new flags and lines have improved visibility immensely.
Safety is everyone’s responsibility.
- A reminder that when exiting the school driveway during the busy morning and afternoon periods that you must turn left onto Hodgson Cres (not up the hill to the right) and always watch for children on the crossing.
- On Murphy St, never allow your child to cross the road on their own.
- Please use the school crossings if walking across Hodgson Cres.
NAPLAN 2023
We are expecting the 2023 NAPLAN results for Years 3 and 5, to arrive early Term 3. Along with the test being completed earlier in the year, there are a few changes to the way the results will be reported to parents.
Information from ACARA about NAPLAN:
- From 2023, NAPLAN results are reported against proficiency standards with 4 levels of achievement to give teachers, parents and carers clearer information on how students are performing.
- Results from 2023 onwards cannot be directly compared with results from 2008-2022 due to the changes.
- The school will then give parents/carers a report showing their own child’s results.
- Parents/carers can talk to the teacher about these results.
- Teachers use results to help identify students who need greater challenges or extra support.
- Schools use results to identify strengths and areas of need to improve teaching programs, and to set goals in literacy and numeracy.
- NAPLAN shows how students are going all over Australia. The community can see information about the performance of schools over time at myschool.edu.au.

Yours faithfully,

Sacred Heart Pyjama Day
In conjunction with the Vinnies CEO Sleepout (Thurs 22th June) and the Vinnies Winter Appeal, students are encouraged to wear their pyjamas to school on Friday 30th June.
For the privilege of wearing their pyjamas, students are asked to bring a gold coin donation to support St. Vincent de Paul. Just a reminder to wear appropriate footwear that will allow safe participation in school activities.
Thank you for the very generous donations to the St. Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. Vinnies will be collecting the items from our school tomorrow.
Sacred Heart will also be donating all the money raised on Friday’s Pyjama Day to the Vinnies Winter Appeal Essential Packs drive.
The Sacred Heart Mini Vinnies group would like to take this opportunity to thank the community for their support and kind donations.
Congratulations to the following students celebrating their birthday this week

Happy Sacred Heart Feast Day
Our Feast Day was a truly joyous celebration for our school community. We are incredibly grateful to the members of our school community who contributed to our Feast Day celebrations by attending Mass, assisting in the canteen, and baking cupcakes.
Playgroup
Last week 3 of our Year 6 Sustainability Leaders worked with Mrs Wills in the freezing cold to prepare a garden bed for playgroup to plant their tulip bulbs.
Thank you Imogen, Isabella and Sophie for your commitment to your leadership role to work in such freezing conditions.
Then these girls helped our Tuesday and Thursday Playgroup children to plant the tulip bulbs.
Canberra Reptile Zoo
Stage 1 had an exciting and educational visit from the Canberra Reptile Zoo to learn all about living things and their habitats!
Kinder Went to the Zoo
Kindergarten had an incredible day exploring all the living things at The National Zoo & Aquarium Canberra. The children were so brave; they touched a snake and fed deers, alpacas and an emu! It really was a day to remember. ❤️
